"I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, and wonder how he could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean."
Every time I sing this hymn, I couldn't help but deeply touched by the love of our Savior. Awesome love He has for us that drove Him to die a gruesome death on the cross.
How marvelous! How wonderful! is this love that every step He took on the way to Calvary, He took it for me. Every pain He endured, He endured it for me.
So like the hymn writer, I too cried out, "How marvelous! How wonderful! is my Savior's love for me!"
This hymn is also known as 'My Savior's Love' (#186 in Hymns for Worship Revised and #303 in Sacred Selections for the Church) and both hymn lyrics and music were composed by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel who is the author and composer of numerous other well known hymns.
He also composed the music for Brighten the Corner Where You Are by Ina Ogdon.

I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene,
And wonder how he could love me,
A sinner, condemned, unclean.
How marvelous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me!
For me it was in the garden
He prayed: "Not my will, but thine."
He had no tears for His own griefs,
But sweat-drops of blood for mine.
In pity angels beheld Him,
And came from the world of light
To comfort Him in the sorrows
He bore for my soul that night.
He took my sins and my sorrows,
He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calvary,
And suffered and died alone.
When with the ransomed in glory
His face I at last shall see,
'twill be my joy through the ages
To sing of His love for me.
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
- Luke 22:41-44 KJV
I Stand Amazed in the Presence also brings back memories of a friend who whenever asked for a hymn to be sung in a meeting would take up his guitar and sang with much feeling this so familiar hymn. I believe he is now in the very Presence of our God now.
