Categories for Finding Hymns

1. By Categories or Themes

Here we organise this digital resource by themes, such as:

Many hymns can be found in more than one category or theme. For example, hymns like "How Great Thou Art" or " Amazing Grace" are commonly found under praise or grace themes respectively.

2. By Event or Occasion

  • Baby Dedication
  • Funeral Service/Memorial Service - Not all are grieving hymns - includes hymns that tells of the wonderful life after death: life without sorrows, tears and pains.
  • Wedding Ceremony- What are suitable hymns for a wedding ceremony especially one being held in a church? The eternal love of God for us - the love of the bridegroom for the bride; for Christ's love His Church.
  • New Year- What to sing to greet the new year? Happy songs!
  • Fathers' Day
  • Mothers' Day

This thematic organisation makes it easy to locate hymns for specific life moments.

3. By Liturgical Season

  • Christmas - These are Christmas carols and also some popular Christmas songs.
  • Easter or Good Friday - All about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Thanksgiving - Bountiful harvest
  • Pentecost - e.g "Spirit of the Living God"

Searching by season helps match hymns to the themes of the church year.

4. By Hymn Titles (A-Z)

for this category, all hymns and Christian songs on this hymn website are listed here in alphabetical order according to their titles.

5. By First Line of Hymn

Sometime, actually many a time, we can only remember the opening line of a song ... and will keep singing that only. So after a while, we begin to ask ourselves, 'Hey! What's that song? What's the title? I need the whole song lyrics."

This page will, hopefully, helps you find that hymn.

6. By Hymn Writers

Renowned hymn writers have left a significant mark on Christian music, and their collections are often categorised by name. For example:

  • Isaac Watts: Known as the "Father of English Hymnody," wrote classics like "Joy to the World".
  • Fanny J. Crosby: A prolific hymn writer, authoring "Blessed Assurance" and " To God Be The Glory."
  • Charles Wesley: Co-founder of Methodism, penned "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing."

Personally, I'm very interested in the writer of each of my favorite hymn. Just wanted to know who he or she was and what caused him/her to write those inspirational words.

Knowing the origin of a song or hymn can help us so much more in appreciating it and singing it in our praise and worship of our wonderful Lord.
